Eight days left until election day!  I, for one, can't wait.

Two people died and one person was injured by a shooter at the University of Central Arkansas .  The police have someone in custody but have declined to state whether or not the person is the suspected shooter.

A purported US missile strike killed approximately 20 in South Waziristan , near the Afghani-Pakistani border.  Among the dead is an aide to a local Taliban/Al-Qaeda leader.

Banks are using bailout money not to make loans but acquire other banks at firesale prices.  The UK required banks to make loans as part of their strategy, but apparently we do not have similar regulations on the books.

Last week of work

This suck-month is almost over.  I've been finishing out my time at the job even though my home is 100 miles to the south in Eugene.  Consequently there's been a lot of crashing on friend's couches, greyhound trips, and ennui.

This thursday is my last day.  I've been looking for decent work in Eugene but nothing so far.  Pretty soon I'll start looking for crappy work just to get by until good work becomes available.

Hopefully post-thursday I'll have some more time to spend here, with my "peeps", as it were.  I have been posting a little on Redstate.

I came. I saw. I posted.

Ennui?

Consequently there's been a lot of crashing on friend's couches, greyhound trips, and ennui.

Was that on your word-a-day calendar?  I had to look that one up.  At first glance, I thought it was some sort of alcoholic drink that the kids enjoy these days.  In fact, I'm going to make a drink called ennui to compete with Drank .  I thought of it first.

Might I also recommend

The Doubtful Guest and The Epipleptic Bicycle, although they really are all quite entertaining. I actually live just a couple of miles from Edward Gorey's house. What's not to love about ennui?

I'm pretty sure we first learned ennui when studying Sartre.

My favorite word to work into conversation is exansguinate or exsanguination.  That one's a b*tch to use without making a non-sequitor.

A mixture

of blind insistence that polls can't be right (a side effect I suppose of believing academia and the media are out to get conservatives) with some shocking realization that 2008 is likely going to be worse then 2006 was.  Also a ridiculous amount of focus on the bogus ACORN meme.  And a dash of "Obama is not a US citizen" conspiracy theories.

In general I'd say the more rational posters are a little dejected but looking for potential up sides (from their perspective).  The less rational posters are freaking out, one way or another.

Top Ten Reasons Conservatives Should Vote For Obama

From Andrew Sullivan .

Note: Sullivan is not a social conservative, he's more of an old-fashioned Buckleyesque conservative. Personally, I think the most compelling reason for anyone who actually cares about the conservative philosophy is #2:

2. Conservative reform. Until conservatism can get a distance from the big-spending, privacy-busting, debt-ridden, crony-laden, fundamentalist, intolerant, incompetent and arrogant faux conservatism of the Bush-Cheney years, it will never regain a coherent message to actually govern this country again. The survival of conservatism requires a temporary eclipse of today's Republicanism. Losing would be the best thing to happen to conservatism since 1964. Back then, conservatives lost in a landslide for the right reasons. Now, Republicans are losing in a landslide for the wrong reasons.

Any thoughts from our resident conservatives?

Despite being a convicted felon, he is not required to drop out of the race or resign from the Senate. If he wins re-election, he can continue to hold his seat because there is no rule barring felons from serving in Congress.

I wonder how legal this is?

Biden routes campaign cash to family, their firms

Democratic vice-presidential candidate Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. has paid more than $2 million in campaign cash to his family members, their businesses and employers over the years, a practice that watchdogs criticize as rife with potential conflicts of interest.

Getty Images FAMILY: Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr.'s son, Hunter Biden, was at a campaign stop with his father in December. The candidate's sister, Valerie Biden Owens, is his longtime campaign manager.

The senator from Delaware also directed campaign legal work to a Washington lobbying and law firm founded by his son R. Hunter Biden , the disclosures show.

Putting family members and their companies on the political payroll is legal if the work is legitimate and charged at market rates, according to the Federal Election Commission. Still, public watchdog groups have long criticized such arrangements.

The money largely flowed from the coffers of Mr. Biden's failed presidential campaign during the past two years to a company that employs his sister and longtime campaign manager, Valerie Biden Owens, according to campaign disclosure filings.

The operative part of this:

Putting family members and their companies on the political payroll is legal if the work is legitimate and charged at market rates, according to the Federal Election Commission.

I think this practice is rife for abuse (you provided no evidence that the Biden family did not competently complete the work that they were paid for), but at least the payments come out of money raised by the candidates, so my taxes don't pad the bank accounts of a politicians family against my will.  It's not as bad as when taxpayer funds are funneled to family members, like when millions in taxpayer funds earmarked for No Child Left Behind found it's way into the hands of Neil Bush's junk software outfit.

I doubt he'll really be expelled

The election is less than two weeks away and the republicans don't want to give the story any more airtime if they can help it.  Between nov 4th and Jan 9th I suspect they'll be rather too busy to bother.

I am surprised though that he was found guilty on all counts some of the stuff I had read made it sound like there was a decent chance he'd skate out scott free, guess that was wishful thinking.

(half-a$$ed) plot to assassinate Obama thwarted

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Law enforcement arrested two men in Tennessee who had plans to rob a gun dealer to shoot Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and "as many non-Caucasians" as possible, an official said on Monday.

An official from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said police found the men in the Jackson, Tennessee area with a number of guns, including a sawed-off shotgun, in their car.

"They wanted to go to a place where they could shoot as many non-Caucasian as they could," the official said, noting that the men first planned to rob a gun dealer. "They also had a plot to assassinate Sen. Obama."

www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE49Q7KJ20081027

From the initial report these guys sound like idiots who never would have gotten close to Obama, but thanks to the flood of cheap guns they very well might have killed plenty of brown skinned people.

By the way in addition to the school shooting the other day we also get this story:

With his father and a firearms instructor standing nearby, an 8-year-old Connecticut boy shot himself in the head with a submachine gun yesterday, killing himself in an accident some say should never have happened.

Christopher Bizilj was testing a 9 mm Micro Uzi at the Westfield Sportsman's Club in Westfield, Mass., as part of the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo, when he shot himself Sunday.

abcnews.go.com/US/story

From the same story comes th "No Sh*t Sherlock" of the week:

"It requires all my strength," said Oven, who added that he did not have much experience with the Micro Uzi. "For an 8-year-old, it was inappropriate."

Ya think?  Now can anyone give me an honest reason why both the father and instructor should not be charged with reckless endangerment of a minor and involuntary manslaughter?

Miami Dolphin's owner wants to sell before Obama gets in!

Let the games begin. If Obama is elected this country is doomed!

Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga said Sunday no date has been set for selling up to 45 percent more of the team to Stephen Ross, but the presidential election is among the issues weighing on his decision.

That's because a Barack Obama administration is expected to mean higher capital-gains taxes.

"He wants to double the capital gains tax, or almost double it," Huizenga said. "I'd rather give it to charity than to him."

Ross purchased 50 percent of the team and Dolphin Stadium for $550 million earlier this year with the intention he would eventually become majority owner. NFL owners approved the eventual transfer this month, meaning it can take place anytime.

WRT Redstate and Ted Stevens Conviction

the RS directors have endorsed the Democratic opponents of Both Stevens and Young.  I think this is pretty basic CYA given how much the corruption meme hurt the GOP last time (2006), but it hasn't gone over particularly well with some RS members:

I think hell would freeze over before dkos endorsed a Republican, although I could be wrong.  But I'm happy to see that Redstate's editors are being realistic about the implications of supporting someone that corrupt in office.  (I think the line at dkos would be, "Yes, so-and-so is corrupt, but we desperately need to keep a majority in Congress, etc.")

So good on Redstate for that.  This despite Moe Lane's being the worst blog adminstrator this side of dkos' DHinMI.

Redstate is down... "500 internal server error"

I guess their server melted down from endorsing a Democrat... but I applaud them for doing it, even if just for a moment... if, say, Tom Harkin (sorry Tom) was convicted on a  felony charge relating to corruption, then i think a site like DailyKos would do well to endorse any reasonable Republican candidate for senate in Iowa, if for nothing else than to send a message that corruption would never be tolerated in the name of partisanship.

………… parent

My guess is that they'd take the stance

that the "new" Redstate post has: a refusal to endorse the Democratic candidate without an actual call to vote for the Republican.  That's essentially what happened with William Jefferson (the Rep from New Orleans) in 2006.

Sarah Palin describes Alaska as America's socialist state, while out of the other side of her mouth accusing Obama of being a socialist.

Lather, rinse, repeat:

In fact, Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share  (ACES) program, which manages theredistribution of oil wealth  in Alaska, brings in so much money that the state needs no income or sales tax . In addition, this year ACES will provide every Alaskan with a check for an estimated $3,200 .

As Hendrick Hertzberg notes, “Perhaps there is some meaningful distinction between spreading the wealth and sharing it …but finding it would require the analytic skills of Karl the Marxist.”

Dear, dear, dear, here you go...

This is a distribution of income from a private corporation to the residents of the state they are doing business in.

Hardly taking money from hardworking taxpayers who earned it, and giving it to those who have paid no tax - as Obama is planning.

Nice try though! ;-)

"No Tax"

What about Payroll taxes?

If those that "paid no tax" didn't work, those payroll taxes wouldn't be paid.

People in 5k charity runs earn money for charities in the same way, if they didn't run, the money wouldn't be given to a charity. Would you say the runners helped earn no money for a charity?

Yeah, it's called Socialism Red_Wing

Alaskan's in Sarah Palin's own words, share the collective wealth, by redistributing profits from the oil companies.

Uh, isn't that the definition of socialism, essentially.

Those lazy Alaskans, get more per person in FEDERAL tax dollars, than any other state. They take, take more than their fair share from the rest of us, while they whine and complain about wanting to be 'independent' from the lower 48.

Alaskans take profits from the oil companies and the most Federal dollars out of the Tax Pie.

BTW, Wasilla does not have a tax payer funded fire department, but they do have the highest rate of meth labs.

Sarah I take as much as I can from the Federal govt to build hiways and bridges to nowhere left her little city with a 23 million dollar debt.

It is this type of thinking, Sarah Palin's, John McCain's and your own, where you have the facts a** backwards, that has taken our country down the proverbial toilet. (How's that 401K doing RW?)

It is the economy, stupid.

………… parent

In fact...

Part of the idea of the Permanent Fund is that all mineral rights belong to the state.  If oil is found on your property, you have no right to exploit it under Alaska law.  That's collective ownership of land which is a very big part of communist theory.

The state is literally taking your land, giving it to a private entity upon which to drill, and then taking the revenues and disbursing them equally to everyone in the state.  I don't see how much more socialist you can get.
