Upcoming Ballot Measures
Many have said that President Bush's 2004 victory was at least in part due to the large amount of ballot measures that preemptively restricted same-sex marriages or civil unions. In light of that, we may want to take a look at some measures on the ballot in the coming election. These measures in swing states may prove to be the difference between President McCain and President Obama.
Colorado has a plethora of measures on the ballot: 15 constitutional amendments and 3 initiative statutes will be voted upon in November. Of particular interest is the Colorado Civil Rights Initiative
, which essentially bans affirmative action in public employment or education. Colorado also has measures on the ballot to define a person
as any fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus, as well as issues relating toward mandatory employee-sponsored health care
and union
regulation
. So many issues would seem to confuse who would be helped in Colorado.
Florida's only measure of any consequence is a ban on gay marriage and civil unions . Certainly this will work in McCain's favor as it did with President Bush.
Michigan has two measures on the ballot that will seem to help Obama -- a medical marijuana initiative and state funding for stem-cell research
.
Last but not least, Ohio has several measures on the ballot. The only one that might help Obama is a referendum on payday lending regulations . The Ohio legislature capped all payday lenders at 28% APR. Lending businesses said that they would not be able to stay in business without being allowed to charge their previous rates (often approaching 391% APR) for these short-term loans. To remedy this, the businesses launched a referendum campaign to allow voters to vote on the issue directly.
Note: I apologize for all the links to Ballotpedia, but they are the only centralized reference I can find on this subject. Also, some of the issues are still awaiting approval, so this is only a tentative list.

Colorado Definition of Person Initiative and collateral damage
I wonder if in vitro fertilization would average out to be double murder as 2/3 of people created for it would die.
I wonder how other activities that increase miscarriages would be treated. Would it then be negligent homicide for a pregnant women to have a miscarriage after drinking several cups of coffee a day?
In our society, people are rewarded for pretending to be certain about things they're clearly not certain about. -- Sam Harris,
Taxation could get weird
Can you consider those frozen embryos to be dependents? If you are pregnant can you consider the developing embryo/fetus/etc. to be a dependent? If you conceive just before the new year, do you get to claim the conception as a dependent? How does one prove when once conceived for tax purposes?
That's just off the top of my head.

That's kind of silly
Isn't the logic of tax exemption for dependents, that the parents are bearing a burden for society in taking care of children, and that the burden should be offset somehwhat? Therefore, the point of tax-exemption would be when the child is a burden and not have anything to do with personhood.
No it isn't that silly...
The reason can still apply. The government could simply say that the "person" in the womb is still a child and would therefore be entitled to the benefits of a child just born. The "burden" you mention could still be demonstrated. A pregnant mom still has to take care of her unborn child.

"A pregnant mom still has to take care of her unborn child."
In which case it make sense for the government to assist, doesn't it? However, I don't see where there would be any burden at conception.
Gov't asisst?
Maybe not. But we do. And if we consider the person in the womb a person (and by extension, a child) shouldn't we have no discrimination as to their tax status? Either they are a person entitled to rights or not?

I don't see where children have a right to be considered
dependents. I also don't see where anyone has a right to a tax-deduction. Even if parents have a right to count their children as dependents it would be an issue of the rights of parents and not that of the child. I don't see how personhood effects this issue.
I left something out
Usually you get to claim a dependent for the entire year if they were born in that year.
My father was born at about 11pm on Dec. 31. My grandparents claimed him as a dependent for that entire year even though he was alive for only an hour in that year.
Sorry for any confusion.

Dec 28th my twin daughters
Dec 28th my twin daughters were born and I was kind of shocked I was allowed to claim them on that year's taxes.
The bigger implication here
is that anywhere the CO lawbooks say "person", that law would have to apply to a just-fertilized egg. That could lead to some funny legal situations.

That's not too different than how it was treated in Romania,
under Ceausescu. Miscarriages are investigated as homicides
. If this resolution passes, would that become a likely scenario?

To put you in an even worse moood
There's a good chance that the referendum will fail**.
The payday lenders have been blanketing the airwaves with arguments that "its my choice" to pay 391%.
Ad 1
The other, which I can't find is essentially the same except its single mom talking about junior getting sick before pay day.
The question I always ask of the supporters of the loan sharks is:
"What did people do before we had pay day loans?"
**Ohio referendums are the most confusing things ever. The referendum is technically to repeal a law already on the books, but you have to vote "no" if you disagree with the law. A "yes" vote keeps the law on the books.

Voters need a good education
on this crap.
Wal-Mart pulled the same crap here. They worded a vote, so that some thought they were voting against another big box store when they were really voting for it.
It is the economy, stupid.
Its semi under control
The ballot will clearly state that if you want the law on the books, you vote yes.
It just offends my obsessive-compulsive sensibilities that in a referendum to remove a law from the books, you must vote yes to keep it. I think its more logical to vote yes to remove it and no to keep it ... since its a referendum.

Parasites indeed
These are the very same people that drove Jesus to violence when he attacked the moneychangers in the temple.
So, I say to the people of Ohio -- Jesus kicked ass, so can you!

"Even *Jesus* hates these guys."
Good slogan.

I hear you
and I am up for it.
The people running this crap called the McCain campaign have no souls and no honor.
Palin/McCain: They will say anything and change nothing.

Jesus was a Democrat
Is there anyone who wants to argue otherwise?
Go ahead. Tell me how Jesus was in favor of tax cuts for corporations or war with countries that have not attacked us.

I maintain that the just war doctrine
is clear indication that a church has no connection to Christ. Pacifism would seem to be the only consistent approach (again I have to respect the Amish for getting their faith right).
I always have to giggle at people who think "Christianity is not a suicide pact." Do they even know the significance of the cross? *snort*

Jesus was a Rabbi.
Some christians forget that.
the real history
is a fascinating tale. Jesus was a rabbi. Cool.
I guess he couldn't be a 'christian' unless he worshipped himself!

And Jewish
Which makes him an odds-on favorite to vote a party-line Democratic ticket.

The marriage ban in Florida
might help boost McCain even though it's likely to lose
on its own terms. Similar bans on the agenda in non-swing states Arizona and California, and it's having massive diminishing returns: after a clear majority in California in 2000, it's looking like it may not pass at all in 2008 (CA requires only a simple majority).
Saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. - Ambrose Bierce
Florida is sane
in that the require a supermajority to change their constitution. Ohio and many other states only require a simple majority when the issue is submitted to the voters.

California's anti gay marriage Constitutional Amd is losing
& we only require a majority.
