Narratives of civil conflict
adam ricketson - Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 12:28Promoted by Brendan
Much of our political discourse refers to narratives of civil conflict, either using them to frame issues (e.g. Lou Dobbs' War on the Middle Class) or accusing others of promoting these narratives of conflict (e.g. class war, racism) rather than narratives of unity. Below is a haphazard analysis of narratives of civil conflict. I'd love to hear your thoughts, as well as any recommended readings on the topic.

stinerman - Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 08:04Discussions between Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leaders, including former Presidential hopeful Morgan Tsvangirai start today in South Africa. The discussions are designed to give opposition parties a larger seat at the policy-making table. Mugabe has been increasingly pressured by the international community after allegations of an unfair electoral process.
The New York Times refused to publish an editorial by Sen. John McCain that was offered as a counter to Sen. Barack Obama's editorial on the state of Iraq. The newspaper claimed that the rebuff was not politically motivated, but hinged on the fact that, in the opinion of the NYT, McCain's editorial did not concretely define what would constitute victory in Iraq.

Salim Hamdan of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld fame will face a military tribunal

SC Discussion Topic 1: Ballot Access Laws in the US
stinerman - Friday, July 18, 2008 - 15:17Over the course of the next few weeks or possibly months, I'm going to pose a high-level political process question to the SC faithful. These questions will be mostly about how the government is fundamentally structured rather than on some sort of issue. My hope is that we can all debate from first principles on an issue that isn't readily discussed in normal political discourse.
Today, I'll ask questions about ballot access laws.

The successful surge strategy in graphs
Bird Dog - Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 11:39Every picture tells a story, don't it. The following graphs don't tell the whole story of the surge strategy because Iraq is a big and old and complex place, but they do provide some measures of how the strategy is going, and it's going quite well. Civilian casualties are way down, to historic lows.

So are U.S. military casualties.

Fear Factor
Forgiven - Monday, July 14, 2008 - 00:09Someone once described courage as not never being afraid, but going on in spite of the fear. As a nation and as elected officials we seem to be running dangerously low on courage. Oh we have the tough talk down, we have the posturing, but do we really have true courage? Since 9/11 when at least 2,985 people died from the terrorists attacks I think that what has been lost in all the hype is some perspective. While this was surely a tragedy, the population of the United States in the year 2001 was somewhere around 290 million people. Based on those numbers the terrorist attacks killed less than .02% of the population, yet since the attack we have responded by invading sovereign nations, torturing our fellow human beings, and gutting our Constitutional protections.
Compelling story of escape by an Iranian dissident
Bird Dog - Sunday, July 13, 2008 - 11:56During student protests in 1999 Iran, Ahmed Batebi was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He waved a bloody shirt to discourage other students from going outside to march. The Economist captured the image, and it both changed his life and saved it.

I like the Iran appears to digitally alter missile photo on the MSNBC frontpage... "appears"??? Here is another quote from the pathetic excuse of MSNBC who can't even state facts as facts - "Photoblog: Picture of test-firing may have been altered to cover up launch failure." - "may have been altered"???
You don't need complicated software to see with a naked eye that one of the missiles in the middle has a different background, crudely photoshopped in. But no, somehow we need to utilize legalese language lest a militant dictatorship on the other side of the world gets offended.

Ender - Monday, July 7, 2008 - 08:52Weak economy may be Wal-Mart’s strong suit - It's a somewhat amusing report that includes someone who protested Walmart's arrival in their community and vowing to never shop there, only to go there when the going go tough. I personally only shop there when it is most convenient - need something small and it's very close to home. But Walmart is defying all efforts to fight it. Very impressive.
Have a wonderful week!
